Just like many other companies in the model train industry, the story of atlas model trains is a story of resourcefulness, entrepreneurship, and hard work, mixed with a passion for a hobby that produced a company that grew larger than what anybody would have envisioned at the beginning.

Origin of atlas model trains goes back to the introductory decades of the twentieth century, when Stephan Schaffan Sr. established what would become atlas model trains. Back then, it was a tool company, and not a model train company and Stephan Schaffan sr. Was so ridden with insufficient human resources that he had his son Stephan Schaffan Jr. Came and assisted him with the business.

Stephan Schaffan Jr. Wasn’t happy with the money that he gained at his dads business (that is if he earned anything at all). He was a young and inventive man who liked machinery. He would go after work and built model airplanes at his house. There was a local airplane model shop where he inhabited, and he would visit it frequently. He applied to pester the possessor by asking for a side job that he could do to earn extra money, to which the possessor would always refuse him.

Nevertheless, one day, the possessor of the store grew so lethargic of Stephan Jr.’s incessant and badgering requests that he gave him a large quantity of old railroads and model trains that he didn’t want to use anymore, in the hopes that Stephan would go away and leave him for crying out loud.

Little did he know that these old railroad tracks and models that he discarded so without apparent effort would finally become what today is known as atlas model trains.

Stephan Jr. Went back home and worked on those trains. Being an inventive and intellectual young man, he designed a switch set, which would become the staple of atlas model trains, and that allowed the user to commence and stop the trains by manipulating the voltage on the tracks.

Thereafter, Stephan Jr. created more productions which made the constitution grow even more, while his fathers business started to look little in comparison. someplace along the line, the first name was dropped and the constitution took the name of atlas model railroad, because most persons know it by the name atlas model trains.

Now with atlas model trains officially existing, Stephan created assorted gimmicks that saved work for the persons who relished the model train hobby. for instance, he created pre-assembles’ tracks, that saved his clients the problem of assembling it themselves. generally his innovations made track assembling much having little impact. Atlas model trains is today one of the greatest names in the industry. because Stephen Jr. is no longer alive, atlas model trains and his bequest made model trains a much more accessible hobby for train lovers.

Once you have determined the scale and make of model train you intend to collect you will then need to focus on designing a layout for your collection. It is important to do your due diligence when it comes to selecting the model railroad and scenery you wish to use within your layout. Getting these elements right may make a profound determination in how you layout your railroad. If you are a novice in building a model railroad system it is highly recommended that you purchase a kit for your first layout. Creating a layout from scratch should be left to the veteran collector since it is a very tricky job and one that should not be ventured into lightly. A model train kit will come equipped with the model train scale of your choice, railroad tracks as well as some minor landscaping, equipment and accessories. Kits are easily available in specialty model train shops all around the world and it is the best way to start off from scratch.

For you seasoned collector there is plenty of room for experimentation. An experienced model train collector should stay away from the simple and yes boring circular tracks. Begin to push the envelope with your layout and go for a railroad that offers a more exciting and dramatic route. Ask yourself what do you find interesting about trains in general and build on that thought. The masterpiece comes from your imagination. Put your civil engineer hat on and begin to see the layout as a passage through time. See the terrain with rivers, gorges, mountains, deserts, bridges, highways, etc. The layout should be a growing organism. It can start very small, however the layout should be set up to be expandable beyond the space you have available. Over time you may wish to move the entire layout to a new location and the layout should be able to grow into the new location.

For a true masterpiece you will want to incorporate various track designs. You may want to use a continuous loop with an out and back setup. A continuous loop on its own is monotonous and boring but when you add a variation to the setup it becomes part of a masterpiece. The out and back will allow you to incorporate tunnels and bridges, turning circles and even train stations.

Another option that you can explore is that of point-to-point model railroad layout. Although this is of a simple design where the model train has to go from one end of the track on the way to the other, they tend to be far more exciting yet simple to work with. Most of the times you find these tracks accompanied with a train station.

In conclusion the kind of custom model railroad that you choose to build should reflect your character and passion. This is what will make it unique and allow it to become a masterpiece. You should also consider the availability of space and the level of experience that you have in setting up a model railroad. However, do not limit yourself to a short-term situation when you may have more available space in the future. Be sure and visit model railroad shows and comb through model railroad magazines for ideas. The sky is the limit!

First and foremost what you must learn about is the scale system associated with the various sizes of model trains. Basically the term scale is used to denote the size of the model train, which is the ratio of the model train to the actual full size train used for human purposes.

The smallest of these scale spectrums is 1:220 known as the Z scale. The G scale is the largest and its ratio is 1:8. Model train collectors will be able to find a plethora of scales to choose from with the most popular being the HO scale. The G, N and Z are also among the most popular ones, also.

Many people will want to collect the larger scales since the perception is that you can put more detail into the locomotive, cars and bench work layout. I tend to disagree! I believe that all the scales deserve their rightful place and that the detail depends more on the manufacturer than on the size of the scale. I like the HO scale because it lends itself into allowing me to build the layout that I like with the limited amount of space that I have available.
Those with extremely limited space may want to consider the Z scale since it is the smallest. Some people consider the Z to be a poor value for collecting because they feel the details are to small to appreciate. I believe the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and that the scale that best fits your taste as well as space should be a factor in determining which type you will choose.

As Thomas the Train enlightened every boy?s fantasy and graced the thoughts of those who have been awed by those fantastic machines, trains offer a powerful addiction to many. Small boys watch the talking trains from their living rooms and do not understand what it is that makes them so wonderful. But as boys grow into men they realize what it is that captured them when they were boys and stayed with them into their adulthood; control over a powerful machine.

But why do men continue to play with these ?toys? even into adulthood? Perhaps it is because we enjoy having control over something so powerful, even though it is only 1/87th the original size. Or perhaps it could be the challenge of understanding what exactly makes a train run. Maybe it is the memories of trains along the countryside or around the Christmas tree as they grew. But what ever it is, one thing is for certain ? it is no longer a toy when talking about model trains. These toys have somehow transitioned into machines, perfect for the big boys.

When most people think of toy trains, they picture the small plastic variety that are popular around the toy stores and big chain stores. These are generally not very good quality and are made from plastic, not steel. But they do offer a wonderful introduction to young boys to the wonderful hobby of model train railroading. As young boys grow into men, so to do their toys. They eventually transition into locomotives and are made to last for generations. They are made of a much higher quality and construction, with many features and functionalities that are not available on toys. They are built to have solid contact with the track and get the best electrical current possible to insure the smoothest track. They give a very real life experience and have a stronger engine, which means greater pulling capacity. They are heavier and allow for the most real life experience for all those involved.

As in real life there are many different types of model trains. The most typical being the electricity, but if this isn?t good enough, you can also find high quality steam engines. There are many types even of steam engines and there is nothing better then enjoying these model trains with lifelike steam filling the scenery.

Very few boys get to grow up to be able to actually drive a train. I?m sure that a lot of train drivers look at the work they do as a job rather then a little boy?s life long dream. But, we don?t have to all grow up to be train drivers to fulfill our dreams. We can indulge ourselves in the hobby that so many of us love; model trains.

A well designed and cleverly painted backdrop can make your model railroad layout stand out from the rest and look truly unique. This is mostly because it makes an optical illusion that produces an effect called forced perspective.

Forced perspective occurs when the layout in the foreground appears to be larger because it is placed in front of a space in the distance, which is made by adding a backdrop to the wall in the case of model railroads. It is an optical illusion that will make your entire model railroad layout appear to be larger than it really is.

The effect of forced perspective can be observed all around us. For instance, a barn several hundred feet away from you will look smaller than a Chihuahua sitting on the ground ahead of it. By analyzing natural landscapes you will notice techniques you can use to make an outstanding backdrop to use with you model railroad layout.

Projects of this sort always require lots of planning. Hopefully, you will be working on your backdrop at the same time that you are designing the rest of your model train layout. A mistake that many people make is working on the backdrop after they have finished everything else. If you design them together, you can make some interesting and unique set pieces.

To make your backdrop, you need to have in mind what season it will, what the weather will be like, the location you will be showing, and what kind of day it will be. Planning these details will save you lots of frustration in the long run.

Think about what the sky will look like. Remember that, even on a cloudless day, the sky is actually made up of several different hues of blue due to the position of the sun and other environmental factors. A good base color is Velvet Sky Vinyl, available in acrylic flat paint.

When considering what the clouds will look like, remember that no two clouds are quite the same. The grand majority of clouds are cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. The most common clouds are the white and puffy cumulus ones.

The color of clouds also varies quite a bit depending on where they are positioned in the sky. Decide where the sun is in your backdrop and then color the clouds near is lighter than those farther away.

After getting all your supplies together you need to form your terrain, which is often done by placing foam spacers and carving them to achieve the desired results, then coating those with a plaster, fiberglass or other sealer to harden them. Wireframe models with reinforcement are also used on larger landscapes, while some ‘purists’ will actually haul in stone, dirt and sand in an attempt to make a ‘true’ world.

It is worth noting that the addition of real-life materials can actually diminish the authentic look that you may be trying to achieve because of the extra texture that is added. Most of the dirt isn’t fine enough to give the look of “earth” in a miniature unless it is coated with a finer powder or dust. You will need to keep the scale in perspective and work up to the tallest items such as mountains. This will help to form the valleys and lakes or stream areas to make them seem more natural.

After doing the base, you can start to have a little fun. By painting all the surfaces, you will cover any extra glue and then you can begin to start to place items like stones and coverings. You can stipple on some grass with a fine brush to make it seem a little more realistic being careful to plan as you go.

For example, if you are adding a water feature, have a ragged edge infringing on the side of it instead of taking grass right up the edge of the water. In real life banks are washed away and tree roots are exposed from nature. By mimicking this, your project will look more realistic and please your viewers.

The easiest way to add the track is to just glue it down. The most realistic way is to make a bed of crushed rock and add wooden beams but this is very time consuming and not very common. You can even find software that will help you with your design and layout. Be careful to keep in mind that there will be maintenance and you will need to be able to access your tracks for cleaning and repairing at later times.

The last step is to create the “vignettes” or small scenes. This is when the imagination of the model railroaders really can really make the layout come to life by creating the tiny scenes.

Having the right theme for your city or train station is as crucial as keeping the right scale. You have the option of erecting the houses and buildings yourself or buying them already done and just placing them correctly. The human eye is capable of detecting even minute differences so staying true to scale is important in keeping the layout realistic.

Obtaining all your supplies is just the start when it comes to model railroading. The next step is to do the landscaping with the help of foam spacers. They can be shaped to the design you’d like and then sealed with a fiberglass or hardener to protect them. A wire frame can be used to reinforce a larger landscape and some modelers will even bring in sand, dirt or stone for a more realistic look.

It is worth noting that the addition of real-life materials can actually diminish the authentic look that you may be trying to achieve because of the extra texture that is added. Most of the dirt isn’t fine enough to give the look of “earth” in a miniature unless it is coated with a finer powder or dust. You will need to keep the scale in perspective and work up to the tallest items such as mountains. This will help to form the valleys and lakes or stream areas to make them seem more natural.

Radio controlled planes make an interesting hobby for a lot of people. These small airplanes have the ability to conduct verycomplex maneuvers in the air, similar to their full-sized brethren. Many of these airplanes can be flown in a large garden or at the local park.

RC planes come in a whole variety of styles. Most of them are modeled on the design of large aircraft. Of late special RC planes have been made to mimic jet aircraft. Some are light in weight while others heavier – with heavier models generally requiring more technique to fly them properly.

Though more tiny than their real counterparts, radio controlled model airplanes can perform many of the maneuvers of the regular plane. They are remotely controlled by radio and are generally bought with instructions on how best to fly them.

It is actually quite simple to fly radio controlled model planes. You can learn some excellent flying tips from local clubs, periodicals and books. One good  place to begin the process of learning how to fly model aircraft is through the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The AMA can provide you with hundreds of tutorials on how to fly various types of radio controlled model airplanes. They also have tutorials for more advanced flying techniques, such as the maneuvers that will blow away your friends, and bring more enjoyment to your pastime. The AMA publishes a weekly periodical to help you keep abreast of RC plane information. Another huge benefit from joining the AMA is that you are offered insurance with your subscription, and updates on radio control model planes events throughout the USA.

If you’d like to learn about flying radio controlled planes on your own, you will first need to get acquainted with the different parts of the model.

The fuselage is the main body of the aircraft. It is the part to which everything else attaches. The wings provide the lift that the aircraft needs to fly. They could be found at the sides of the aircraft. The elevators control the elevation or altitude. By manipulating them you can make the aircraft go up or down. The ailerons will cause the plane to roll over. They are located on both wings. The rudder will control direction of the plane depending on the direction in which they are pulled.

You should also know that there are 4 forces that act on the RC model airplane – the lift that keeps the aircraft in mid air, gravity that wants to pull it down, thrust that moves it ahead, and drag that reduces the velocity of the airplane.

You’re probably wondering which aircraft is the easiest to start flying with? We would recommend starting with those marked ‘Ready to Fly’. These planes come as the complete model with pre-installed radio and servos, and are quite literally ‘ready to fly’ right out of the box.

As a newbie, it is also best to start with electric engine aircraft. They easy to pilot, and all you need to do is to charge the radio and batteries for a flight. Once they get discharged you simply recharge for your next flight. If you are intent on flying in a smaller space you should consider ‘mini’ versions  – these are very tiny and have the ability to easily take off and land in smaller areas. These ones can also be flown at  low altitudes and are suitable for enclosed spaces.
