Rock molds aren’t difficult to produce. You’ll need a little patients, a few tools and I’ll supply you with the basics. In order to save some time I’ll review the most popular method while taking note of the lesser used techniques.

Your first move is to use a photo to determine grade of rock you wish to portray. Secondly you’ll need to put on your walking shoes and head out the front door to find suitable scale replicas. Most likely you can find a handful lying around the yard or possibly you’ll need to partake in a little nature hike in order to locate a good specimen.

Once you’ve found your lucky charm start the molding process by cleaning your rock, consequently assuring the truest molding possible. After assuring rock surface is fit for duty then it’s time to apply your liquid latex. Cover drape rock completely with latex. Once latex is dry repeat basting with latex two or three more times.

After you’ve finished the initial layers of latex, drape your casting with gauze and place even another layer of trusty latex atop your newly formed mold!

No fear if you’re saying to yourself… sounds like to much work! modeling companies have pre-fabricated moldings that will do the trick at minimal cost!

If you’re looking to really save, simply reduce the number of molds you purchase or build by taking your purchased or hand built molds and splitting it into pieces or simply flip it around.

If choosing this technique don’t forget to place your molds in completely random positions never repeating the same pattern unless dictated by photo or prototype.
