Most of the books and magazines about model railway building are aimed at experienced modellers, with very little thought for beginners. So, for beginners it is always best to start off with a simple pack that has something of everything to get you going.

Another place you will find good, practical advice and plenty of encouragement is by joining your local modelling club. But to get you started here are a few tips to think about.

The first thing you need to consider is who the model for. If it is for children you are probably going to concentrate less on detail and realism. The model will have to be a bit more robust to withstand children playing with it. If the model is for an adult, then detail and realism are going to be much more important.

You will need to decide early on what gauge railway you will use. This is important because it will determine how your model develops over time. The gauge is basically the distance between the rails. If the space you have available is small you will need to go for a small gauge model. But, if you have a lot of free space for your railway model building, then go for a larger gauge.

Once you have decided on what gauge track, the next thing to consider is the layout of the tracks. Starter kits come with a standard oval track. At first this may appear boring, and not very realistic watching a train chasing its tail. But, it’s a good layout on which to get started and learn the basics of railway model building. If you are starting out and have limited space the simple, straight layout will serve you well.

After the basics as mentioned above are decided upon, you can then move on to being more creative. Sorting out the track length, the positioning and size of the station, scenic details are all the things that make railway modelling such fun for a lot of people.

Acquiring the basic skills of model railway building, and becoming familiar with the jargon is all part of beginners’ experience. With these under your belt you are then in a position to extend your model.

I believe that as long as you are realistic and are willing to commit some time and effort to find out about boat construction and acquire basic woodworking knowledge, you can surely build a boat that you will feel proud to use in the river or lake near your house.

The method that you will use to construct your boat should be the very first thing you should settle before carry on.

If you have very little skill and experience but still want to have a boat that you will feel pleasing to have, do start with the “Stitch and Glue” method. It is one of the easiest available method for boat building. It does not require any stems and chines.

Next, decide on your main objective for building the boat.

Is it that you want to have the fastest boat among your peers? Or is it that you want to build something that look beautiful and stylish even if it will fail badly in the river? Or is it that you only want something simple which you can use on a cool morning to row across the lake and relax.

You should get for yourself some boat design blueprint once you have settled your main objective for having the boat and the building approach you will use.

A blueprint will surely help you greatly in your boat building process. Without it, it is like making the boat blindfolded.

Plans and blueprint for boat building is available in many places. Go and google for the various companies that have it. It should be relatively easy to find. If not, you can visit your local bookstore or Amazon to purchase one.

Before you go sourcing for all the necessary things, i have a suggestion for beginners. Do consider obtaining a boat building kit instead. It should be easily available online or at any outdoor store near your house. The kit normally will have all the material and blueprint that you need to build your boat.

If you pursue this option (and it is recommended for rookie boat makers), all you have to do is assemble the various materials (usually plywood and fibreglass) and you will be good to go. Other than your own manual labor, the total cost of a small boat can come out to be less than $250.

Boat making for some people could be considered as a happy yet obsessive leisure activity. By seeing how a beautiful boat is built from just a pile of woods, this alone I think produce great level of satisfaction and enthusiasm for many boat builders.

You’ll need a little patients, a few tools and I’ll supply you with the basics. In order to save some time I’ll review the most popular method while taking note of the lesser used techniques.

Your first move is to use a photo to determine grade of rock you wish to portray. Secondly you’ll need to put on your walking shoes and head out the front door to find suitable scale replicas. Most likely you can find a handful lying around the yard or possibly you’ll need to partake in a little nature hike in order to locate a good specimen.

Once you’ve found your lucky charm start the molding process by cleaning your rock, consequently assuring the truest molding possible. After assuring rock surface is fit for duty then it’s time to apply your liquid latex. Cover drape rock completely with latex. Once latex is dry repeat basting with latex two or three more times.

After you’ve finished the initial layers of latex, drape your casting with gauze and place even another layer of trusty latex atop your newly formed mold!

No fear if you’re saying to yourself… sounds like to much work! modeling companies have pre-fabricated moldings that will do the trick at minimal cost!

If you’re looking to really save, simply reduce the number of molds you purchase or build by taking your purchased or hand built molds and splitting it into pieces or simply flip it around.

If choosing this technique don’t forget to place your molds in completely random positions never repeating the same pattern unless dictated by photo or prototype.

That’s it my friend… I hope this helps in your quest for realistic rock scenes for your model train layouts. Just remember to provide your layout with the illusion of individuality and you’ll head and shoulders above most.

While being able to make the perfect layout is fantastic, it is hardly the only thing that you can do with model train software. You can design your own scenery by making billboard ads or put up new signs with logos of just about any company or symbol that you can think of. There are four basic sizes when it comes to model trains. N, HO, O and G scales are the four sizes you have to work with. Choosing the right one depends only on the amount of room you have to set up in.

The smallest of all of the model train scales is the N scale. These are more like matchbox scale as they are only 3″ long. If you are challenged for space, you are will not find a better size to work with. You can still have a pretty extravagant set up, it will just be done with miniatures.

For the most part, HO scale is what you are going to see prominently displayed at most hobby shops. This is because most of the companies that sell these supplies concentrate the bulk of their product in this level. At only 6 inches big, they are the perfect size to create a very attractive display and offer the most variety.

O scale cars are synonymous with one manufacturer, Lionel Trains, who has been manufacturing this size train since 1900. Originally designed to be a window display for department stores, it quickly caught on to becoming a household accessory, particularly around Christmas time. These cars are around 9″ long and are the most popular choice for those incredible under the tree displays.

For the really big enthusiast, we have the G scale. At 16 inches long and 6 inches high, they make quite an impression. Again, these are not really meant for home use unless you live in a castle. They are ideal for outdoor layouts and you will also see them at shows to gather a crowd. They are really something special to see.

Whichever model train scale you select, continue to bear in mind the concern for room. Each of these scales has a minimum turning radius, so be sure to leave enough room when building your layout to accommodate this. HO scale, by far, is the easiest choice of them all when it comes to being the best all around set for either experienced model railroaders or someone who is just starting out.

For one final concern is the power that is needed to get your train around the track. You can rest easy when you are selecting your set because there is no danger to the little ones. They usually run off of the 110 volt outlet that you will already have and will require no alterations. This means a lot of safe and happy train operating down in the basement with dad and the kids!

When you are at a model train show, the train is not the only thing that is going to be going round and round. There are so many incredible things to see that you are going to find that you may not have enough time in the day. You can literally lose yourself at model train shows if you are into this hobby.

As soon as you walk in, you are going to realize that you are now in the Mecca of the hobby. Aisles and aisles of displays and things to buy can be a little overwhelming, so keep make sure you stay in control or your wallet will be empty when you come up to that item that you have been searching for forever.

If there was ever a time that you should bring the kids, this is it. If you want your son or daughter to get into the hobby just as much as you, take them with you and let them enjoy the different things that are set up with kids in mind. They are going to have as much fun as you and will be dying to spend time with you setting up your next scene.

Shows, like your trains, come in a variety of sizes. There are huge shows that will literally take your breath away and then there are smaller ones that may happen a little more regularly. All of them are going to have things that you may have never thought of and they are a great way to get new ideas.

A lot of times the smaller shows are a gathering of local hobbyists that are just getting together to sell of their old stuff or trade with other people. The traveling shows are the really large ones and you will usually see them being held at hotels or convention centers. If you really want to be impressed, you have to make sure you see at least one of them.

Something that you will see at many of these styles of shows are lectures and demonstrations on different aspects of the hobby. Don’t get into a panic mode thinking that they class will take up the entire time of the show because they are super fast and only meant to enhance your show experience, not dominate it.

Now all of this is great, but we all know you are really here to buy things and you are going to have plenty of ways to spend your cash. You can feed it directly to the vendors or you can wait for the really cool stuff that goes off at the auctions. These are usually pieces that people have had stored away and sometimes you will see some really rare stuff. Even if you aren’t going to buy anything, make the time to walk through because you are truly going to be amazed at what you see.
