Most of the books and magazines about model railway building are aimed at experienced modellers, with very little thought for beginners. So, for beginners it is always best to start off with a simple pack that has something of everything to get you going.

Another place you will find good, practical advice and plenty of encouragement is by joining your local modelling club. But to get you started here are a few tips to think about.

The first thing you need to consider is who the model for. If it is for children you are probably going to concentrate less on detail and realism. The model will have to be a bit more robust to withstand children playing with it. If the model is for an adult, then detail and realism are going to be much more important.

You will need to decide early on what gauge railway you will use. This is important because it will determine how your model develops over time. The gauge is basically the distance between the rails. If the space you have available is small you will need to go for a small gauge model. But, if you have a lot of free space for your railway model building, then go for a larger gauge.

Once you have decided on what gauge track, the next thing to consider is the layout of the tracks. Starter kits come with a standard oval track. At first this may appear boring, and not very realistic watching a train chasing its tail. But, it’s a good layout on which to get started and learn the basics of railway model building. If you are starting out and have limited space the simple, straight layout will serve you well.

After the basics as mentioned above are decided upon, you can then move on to being more creative. Sorting out the track length, the positioning and size of the station, scenic details are all the things that make railway modelling such fun for a lot of people.

Acquiring the basic skills of model railway building, and becoming familiar with the jargon is all part of beginners’ experience. With these under your belt you are then in a position to extend your model.

Design and build software is available not only for track layouts, but for individual cars also. Building layouts and print allows you to customize a particular style of building then print the plans out to whichever scale you choose. Other printable options are signs and advertisements, window treatments and train schedules with timetables.

The use of model train software lets you see your track layout before you ever build it in real life. This lets you plan the size and shape of the layout before ever buying a piece of material to build it, thereby cutting down on unnecessary trips to the store. This is extremely useful in planning a layout in an area with minimal space.

While being able to make the perfect layout is fantastic, it is hardly the only thing that you can do with model train software. You can design your own scenery by making billboard ads or put up new signs with logos of just about any company or symbol that you can think of. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

The smallest of all of the model train scales is the N scale. These are more like matchbox scale as they are only 3″ long. If you are challenged for space, you are will not find a better size to work with. You can still have a pretty extravagant set up, it will just be done with miniatures.

For the most part, HO scale is what you are going to see prominently displayed at most hobby shops. This is because most of the companies that sell these supplies concentrate the bulk of their product in this level. At only 6 inches big, they are the perfect size to create a very attractive display and offer the most variety.

O scale cars are synonymous with one manufacturer, Lionel Trains, who has been manufacturing this size train since 1900. Originally designed to be a window display for department stores, it quickly caught on to becoming a household accessory, particularly around Christmas time. These cars are around 9″ long and are the most popular choice for those incredible under the tree displays.

For the really big enthusiast, we have the G scale. At 16 inches long and 6 inches high, they make quite an impression. Again, these are not really meant for home use unless you live in a castle. They are ideal for outdoor layouts and you will also see them at shows to gather a crowd. They are really something special to see.

Whichever model train scale you select, continue to bear in mind the concern for room. Each of these scales has a minimum turning radius, so be sure to leave enough room when building your layout to accommodate this. HO scale, by far, is the easiest choice of them all when it comes to being the best all around set for either experienced model railroaders or someone who is just starting out.

For one final concern is the power that is needed to get your train around the track. You can rest easy when you are selecting your set because there is no danger to the little ones. They usually run off of the 110 volt outlet that you will already have and will require no alterations. This means a lot of safe and happy train operating down in the basement with dad and the kids!
